| | Friend, May is Mental Health Awareness *and* Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, so we couldn't think of a better time to spread awareness about mental health in the Asian Pacific American community. Seeking mental health support is still largely stigmatized in our community, despite suicide being the fifth largest cause of death among Asian Americans (Source: South Asian Mental Health Initiative & Network). In addition to stigma, many members of our community hesitate to seek support due to language and cultural barriers. The South Asian Network continues to advocate for mental health in our community in the following ways: - Advocating for additional funding to support mental health services for the Asian Pacific American community;
- Creating awareness in our community about the importance of getting mental health support;
- Providing linguistically and culturally specific mental health therapy at little or no cost to community members in need.

On April 25th, we hosted a Politics & Pakoras forum on the impacts of recent immigration policies and proposals on the South Asian American community. Our speakers were Amy Ghosh, Law Offices of Amy Ghosh; Aman Thind, Project Director - Immigration, Asian Americans Advancing Justice - LA; and Juhi Verma, Assistant Professor, Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations. Our Executive Director, Shikha Bhatnagar, moderated the discussion. Over 30 people attended the event - no small feat for SAN's first event in the Valley in recent memory!
